Susan grew up in southern Connecticut, met her husband while at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., and moved to Beaufort almost immediately after the marriage. Ten years ago she began her pursuit of painting, studying anatomy and painting at the Savannah College of Art and Design, and has attended numerous national workshops. Susan is a member of the American Society of Portrait Artists. “The first time I sketched palmetto fronds was a few years ago when I was with a group of artist selected to spend a week on Pritchard's Island, S.C. I had lived in Beaufort, S.C. for 35 years. But I had never painted the landscape. On Pritchard's I was confronted with the natural environment…and I was expected to make something out of it! It wasn’t until I found myself in my loft in northwestern Massachusetts away from home with big blank walls onto which I had stapled large pieces of canvas, that I found myself wanting to paint Palmetto fronds. I had brought with me stacks of photos I had taken on Pritchard's, Hunting and Bay Point Islands, as well as the sands near my home in Port Royal. I don’t know whether I was missing my South Carolina home or whether I was simply at a loss for what to paint on those big, blank walls, but there I was, in the frozen north, painting subtropical foliage. These paintings of palmetto fronds are not landscape paintings. They are up-close-and-personal paintings of the characters that populate the landscape. I hope to find the colors, the contours, the drama, that make-up the essence of the Lowcountry.” Sensitive use of color and masterful technique are Susan’s hallmark, earning her numerous awards. Her work is enthusiastically collected.
