                        Marcy Dunn Ramsey

Marcy has had a long and varied career in the arts as a portrait artist, teacher, graphic designer, illustrator, printmaker and painter. She earned her B.A. in French in 1967 from Emmanuel College in Boston, and then studied at St. Mary’s College, The Boston Museum of Fine Arts, The University of Maine, The University of Maryland and the Maryland Institute of Art. She has been painting exclusively for the last twenty years.

Marcy’s oil paintings of water, marshes, and reflections, begin as photographs taken from her kayak. This intimate perspective gives a unique view.

“I am drawn to all the manifestations of the life cycle: emerging in new greens, tangled growth, fallen giants, even death and decay. The tangled complexity of the marsh environment lures me down into the water that nourishes life. There is tension between that vital chaos and the serene flatness of the reflective surface of the water that I find compelling. I look for underlying patterns and design structures in nature that act like a matrix, or framework… where the space in between become positive shapes that blur the edges between what the thing is and what it is not. The paint itself becomes the subject. There is a connection between what I see and then feel, to what I translate to the canvas that I hope will strike a cord of recognition to the viewer.”
